An unconventional portrait of painter Frida Kahlo and photographer Tina Modotti. Simple in style but complex in its analysis, it explores the divergent themes and styles of two contemporary and radical women artists working in the upheaval of the aftermath of the Mexican Revolution.

Although the film is old, with simple editing techniques, it eloquently portrays the artist's life in the famous "Blue House" outside of Mexico City that she shared with her husband, the famous muralist and painter Diego Rivera. A near fatal bus accident, years of traumatic surgery, and endless heartache left Frida Kahlo devastated, relentlessly transferring her physical and emotional pain to the canvas. Readings from her diaries, archival photographs, and film footage offer an intimate portrait of one of the most astonishing figures of the twentieth century. Narrated by Sada Thompson and commentary written by Hayden Herrera, this documentary explores Kahlo as the center of the Mexican renaissance of the 1920s and 1930s. Not just as an artist, but as a tragic figure as it follows her painting career, her growing interest in politics and her turbulent relationship with her husband, Diego.

Originally, the images of Variations on two photographs by Tina Modotti were engraved directly on 16mm film to be projected as a backdrop for Louis Bédard's choreographic piece entitled Elles, which was inspired by the life and work of the well-known Mexican photographer Tina Modotti. My animations were particularly inspired by two images, first a photography of roses and second a photography of telegraphic wires, suggesting on the one hand an intimate and enclosed universe and, on the other, an infinite opening of space full of potential messages. I have reworked and developed them into an almost abstract meditative drama, caught in a tension between those two photographs.

Filmmaker Amy Stechler reveals one of the most well-known female artists of the 20th Century in "The Life and Times of Frida Kahlo" (2005). This biopic guides viewers through the life and times of one of Mexico's legendary painters who was also an enduring feminist icon. Kahlo suffered from illness and a destructive relationship with fellow artist Diego Rivera but never lost her dramatic flair and radicalism. This profoundly new portrait of the famous artist includes thousands of photographs, rare movie footage of the artist and her era, and interviews of friends, students and experts.

Frida is 11 years old and on the threshold of adolescence. Her older sister Kaisa is into boys and sticky, romantic youth magazines. Frida thinks Kaisa is behaving very stupidly and she herself has never intended to be like that.

TINA is a surreal thriller about a woman who goes through self-transformation therapy only to be haunted by an Indian classical dancer, forcing her to confront herself in a way she never expected.
